    • Cloyd A. Shimmons, 79 of 427 Colerain St. Sligo died Tuesday AM July 17, 2012 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. Born April 24, 1933 in Huey he was the son of James and Dorothy Fair Shimmons. Cloyd was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served stateside during the Korean Conflict. He was married on May 25, 1957 to Carolyn Hayner who survives. He previously worked for many years at both General Electric in Erie and Pullman Standard in Butler, later he worked for Bracken Construction in Sligo, and most recently at the Clarion Airport and Trader Horn in Clarion. Cloyd was a longtime member of the Church of Nazarene in Sligo where taught Sunday School for the last 40 yrs. He was loving father and husband with a colorful personality. Cloyd was a passionate fan of Pittsburgh and local sports teams, enjoyed writing songs and writing letters to the editors of local newspapers. He was a voracious reader, WW II scholar and American History buff. In addition to his wife of 55 yrs. Carolyn, Cloyd is survived by 2 daughters Suzanne Prevost and her husband Frank of Lexington, KY and Brenda Shimmons and her companion Lamar Scott of Atlanta, GA., 3 sons James Shimmons of Sligo, Mark Shimmons and wife Laura of Atlanta,GA, and Jonathan Shimmons and wife Michelle of Washington,D.C., grandchildren Elizabeth Lindquist and husband Christopher, Emily Prevost, Jacob Shimmons, William Shimmons, and Nathan Shimmons, greatgrandchildren Caroline, Lauren, and Will Lindquist, a sister Shirley Stewart and husband Virgil 'Sonny' of Huey, 2 sisters-in-law Shirley Shimmons of Huey and Pat Shimmons of Summerville and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 2 brothers James 'Dinger' Shimmons and George Shimmons. The family will recieve friends from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Friday July 20, 2012 at the Varner Funeral Home in Sligo. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Saturday July 21, 2012 from the funeral home with the Rev. Leonard Goughler, Pastor of the New Athens Church of God of Prophecy, officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the ceremonial squads of the American Legion and VFW Posts of Rimersburg. Burial will follow in Sligo Cemetery.
